This is the most comprehensive book on the chakra system I have ever read. As someone who has struggled recently with balancing spirituality with modern beliefs and values, it was validating to hear that giving up attachment isn’t actually the way to achieve enlightenment.
Using modern psychology with ancient philosophy, she also clarifies how one can live a connected, spiritual life in contemporary society. I’m sure the title had something to do with it as well being that I’m half Japanese- though opposite the title, I live in a very western body and have always thought with a more eastern mind. That shift has been hard won through the working through of some major personal issues relating to an abusive childhood, substance addiction and combat related ptsd; a kind of triple whammie.

Each chapter focuses on a single chakra, starting with a description of its characteristics and then exploring its particular childhood developmental patterns, traumas and abuses, and how to heal and maintain balance. She is the author of the chakra classic Wheels of Lifealong with several other books, audio courses, and the video The Illuminated Chakras. Challenges in life might come from birth order, chakra blocks, unfortunate karma or any assortment of all, but this book is the key to unraveling what can be done, what to avoid, and how to make you fit better in judiht world. I eastedn to re-read concurrently as I re-read The Sevenfold Journey next year. You walk away from this book feeling like you made some headway and have some hard and fast suggestions to bring areas of your life back into balance.
I’m a yogi, with a degree in psychology, and I’ve been trying to bring the both together and help those around me, but until this book, the information was scattered all over the place. Another way of viewing the whole catastrophe anorea more akin to the sense of fluidity that has evolved around my life than the reductivist “fix it” orientation that much of te profesional help I have encountered adopts.
Maureen not lots of pictures, but there are charts so paperback edition would be more accessible.
It led me to another book, by Alice Miller which I bought this afternoon and devoured in 3 hours. It’s a great “base” to work off of. Easily accessible while dealing with profund spiritual and psyhcological matters, Anodea Judith’s revised edition is still a life changer.
Revised edition of the groundbreaking New Age book that wwestern integrates Western psychology and the Eastern chakra system, including a new introduction from the author. This is also an excellent resource for any parent curious about each childhood development phase.
A really good look juditg the chakra system if you are into that sort of thing! In this book, Judith taken on each chakra, identifying the strengths, weaknesses, excesses, deficiencies, and ways to snodea each one. I have been involved in Buddhist practice and meditation for some years now, and there has been a major internal shift in the way I experience myself and the world. If you’re new to mind-body therapies and the chakra system, this book might indeed be the only one to bridge the gap between esoteric and highly practical.
