This collection of folk tales from medieval Japan is just a total delight. It contains mostly Buddhist stories however and almost nothing in relation to the Shinto Gods, however Shinto is in here too.

If you are reading this review you are curious already about Japan and I would say give this book a try, the stories are easy to read and most are only a few paragraphs long. These vigorously and colloquially translated tales recall worlds conjured by Chaucer, Boccaccio, Perrault, and Grimm; East and West meet in common pursuit of ways to endure social and natural adversity.
