This book is not yet featured on Listopia. It turns out that he is a small-time drug dealer, and his killer is found very soon thereafter. Han van der Kerch wants Karen as his attorney, despite annne lack of criminal experience, and will not talk to anyone else.

La Diosa Ciega

A few days later, a shady lawyer named Hans E. Olsen is found shot. Sand and Wilhelmsen establish a link between the two murders but are completely mystified by the evidence that they find, including documents written in numeric code. The plot is quite complex but very well developed and quite intriguing. The code is based on page references from specific books, and therefore almost unbreakable.

Add in the fact that well-placed individuals in the justice system may be involved, and finding the truth becomes even more difficult. Holt plays fair with the reader and manages to pull off a wonderful twist during the resolution that was a complete surprise, perfectly done. Initially, Hanne is presented as the model police person, but her character becomes much more nuanced as the book progresses.

She has an intuitive ability to get to the heart of a crime and sometimes goes off in unexpected directions. At this point in the series, Hanne is not yet in a wheelchair. The character of Hakon Sand is equally important to the narrative, and Holt does a superb job of creating a fascinating man whose heart belongs to someone that seems unobtainable.

Hanne and Hakon really work well together; it is my fervent hope that they will continue to share investigations in the future as they are so well matched.

I did not like that book very much. Thankfully, I was completely wrong about that.

I really like Anne Holt a lot. This book had diowa and then another murder then another my head was spinning. Affairs and friendships were around. Will definitely read her again.

Some years ago I read Anne Holt’s and thoroughly enjoyed it, but even then I knew that was the final book in the series: The Blind Goddess turns out to be the first.

The story is told through the eyes of two police officers, Hanne Wilhelmsen and Hakon Sand, and a lawyer called Karen Borg. Borg discovers a dead body and the cu The problem with reading crime series written in a foreign language is that sometimes they books aren’t translated into English in the order in which they were written. Borg discovers a dead body and the culprit confesses almost immediately — but then insists on Borg defending him.

Why isn’t clear to anyone. However it’s clear that the murderer has plenty more on his mind than simply being convicted of the crime. That turns out to be an organised crime mafia who will stop at nothing to protect their interests. Moreover, the pa mafia in question appears to have friends at high levels. I really took to the three main characters in this book. They were all credible, and I wanted them all to anne.

Holt, of course, was once Norway’s Minister of Justice so she knows her way around the criminal justice system. Her books are effortlessly accurate, though. These are good yarns, she doesn’t fall into the trap of trying to ciegs off her professional knowledge.

I’ll certainly go on to read the rest of the stories once I can work out for sure which is next. I forget what happens in I can read it again. This is the first one of the Hanne Wilhelmsen series and starts with a murder and a Dutchman keeping schtum. The investigation hits a lot of barriers and at times, just when you think you know who is who, it spins in a different direction.

Just the kind of thing I like. This is a great series for those who like Nordic Noir. I have read some of the more recent books, and decided to go back to the beginning of the series to get to know the main character, a female detective, better.

A fast paced crime thriller. Look forward to reading the rest in the series and seeing how the characters develop. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters and the interesting twists.

Plane to read all in the series. Good Nordic detective stuff with credible people. Awesome read Enjoyed every bit exciting made you think right to the end great read recommend it to all who love thrillers. Such a good read. Another author to add to my “must read” list.

I received my copy from Atlantic Books through Book Bolt and rated it 4.

La Diosa Ciega by Anne Holt (5 star ratings)

Karen, a corporate lawyer, discovers a body while walking her dog. The man, who will be indentified as a drug dealer, has been battered to death. Hours later a young Dutch man is found wondering through the streets of Oslo, covered in blood.

The Dutch student is taken into custody but refuses to speak and will only accept legal representation if it diksa from the lawyer who found the body. But Detective Inspector Hanne Wilhemsen suspects otherwise and her instincts are rarely wrong. When she discovers that the murdered lawyer had defended the murdered drug dealer she has been vindicated and now Hanne and her colleagues have a real case to investigate.

But it is a case without any real leads and far more questions than answers. And when another drug dealer is killed while in prison, Hanne is attacked in work and the Dutch student scared into insanity it becomes apparent that the investigators are up against powerful forces.

Forces that are willing to do almost anything to keep their network and their motives secret. This is my second encounter with a mystery by Anne Holt and I have to say I am impressed.

The mystery, which appears straightforward enough, gets more complicated as the story proceeds. The reader is given more then enough insight into what is going on to keep up with the investigators and at times has access to a bit more information than the characters in the book.

La diosa ciega / Blind Goddess

I really appreciated how realistic this description of an investigation was. The reader gets completely swept up in how frustrating proper police procedure can be for the investigators. No shortcuts are taken in this book, coincidences and suspicions are not enough to warrant an arrest.

The investigators have to dig and dig deeper in order to find the evidence they need to act against those they suspect. And evidence is hard to come by. There is a very nice balance between the crimes, the investigation and the private lives of the various characters in this book.

We learn enough about the characters to take an interest in them and their well-being while those details never interrupt the flow of the story or the unravelling of the mystery. It is interesting to discover that Anne Holt is a former minister of justice in Norway. Reading this book with that knowledge in the back of your mind does make you wonder what exactly is going on at government level, how much is going on behind the scenes that we, the public, are never supposed to find out about.

Absolutely an amazing read!!! It is clear to me why Jo Nesbo described Anne Holt as the ‘godmother of modern Norwegian crime fiction. It is as fresh and modern and exciting and terrific as any of the ‘thrillers’ published in recent years. This is a police procedural of the highest order.

The main characters are a police inspector, Wilhelmsen; a police attorney, Hakon Sand; a lawyer, Karen Borg; and a Absolutely an amazing read!!! The main characters are a police inspector, Wilhelmsen; a police attorney, Hakon Sand; a lawyer, Karen Borg; and a host of others both cohorts and villains I was hooked from the beginning and found it hard to set the book aside to do anything that I needed to do.

This is a definite pick for the Mystery Book Group.
